Cars clocked at 136 km/h

A traffic survey has clocked vehicles traveling at 119 and 136 kilometres an hour in Orange Grove Rd, Blackwall, a 50 km/h speed zone.

The survey was conducted following complaints of speeding and a recent accident, in which a car rolled and crashed through two fences.

However, residents' requests for the installation of traffic calming devices have been rejected.

The traffic speed and volume surveys were carried out at two locations in Orange Grove Rd.

Location 1 was a straight section with average vehicles per day numbering 1859.

The speed of 85 percent of the vehicles was at or below 66 km/h westbound and 63 km/h eastbound, with a maximum speed of 119 km/h eastbound and 136 km/h westbound.

Location 2 near the accident location had an average of 2114 vehicles per day, with an 85th percentile speed of 59 km/h westbound and 56 km/h eastbound and a maximum speed of 94 km/h eastbound and 91 km/h westbound.

According to the council's Traffic Committee, the results indicated that while some excessive speeds were recorded the 85th percentile speeds were within acceptable limits.

The Police Service advised that speed camera operations in Orange Grove Rd failed to produce any infringements, however enforcement within the area will continue.

The council granted the residents' request that guardrail be provided on the northern side of Orange Grove Rd adjacent to numbers 382, 384 and 386.

In addition to the installation of additional 50 km/h signs and road patches, a full investigation is to be undertaken and plans prepared to mitigate the high traffic speeds.
