Speed cameras for school zones
Two Peninsula schools are among 10 schools throughout NSW that will be part of a trial of fixed speed cameras to operate during 40 km/h school zone hours.
Each school in the trial will receive a dedicated camera from the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA).
"This will give all 10 schools full coverage throughout the trial and provide the RTA with more detailed data about their effectiveness," according to Member for Peats, Ms Marie Andrews.
Speed cameras will be installed in Ocean Beach Rd at Woy Woy South Public School and in Blackwall Rd at Woy Woy Public School.
The schools in the trial were selected according to a number of criteria including traffic volumes of around 20,000 vehicles per day, the level of pedestrian use and accident history.
The RTA has started planning to install the speed cameras, with contracts for their construction to be let soon.
All cameras in the trial are expected to be operational early in Term 1 next year, with the trial taking at least six months followed by an evaluation of their effectiveness.
As part of the evaluation, the RTA will conduct speed surveys at selected schools to compare driver behaviour before and after the introduction of safety measures.
