Wetlands damage causes concern

Local residents have expressed concern about the Everglades Melaleuca site being damaged by young people constructing bicycle track jumps in the protected area.

Melaleuca Regeneration Group co-ordinator Ms Norah Clark said: "This area used to flow right down to Ocean Beach, but it was surrendered when roads and houses were built.

"This is all we have left of it.

"It is the sole remnant of a Melaleuca wetland on the Peninsula."

Norah thinks that school children are responsible for damage to the wetland area including freshly dug holes and several young trees which have been recently cut down.

"It's a regeneration site.

"We've been working on this site since June 1996.

"Sometimes we have 15 people come and give their time, twice a month, working for two hours, sometimes more.

"We can't regenerate it if the children keep coming in and destroying what we're doing.

"The parents should be aware that the Australian bush is precious and this is punishable by law.

"If the ranger sees you doing this you can be fined.

"You are not to damage the flora and fauna," Norah said.

Anyone who believes a protected area is being damaged can report the incident to the Gosford Council ranger on 0418 292 504.
