Peninsula man talks on history
Brisbane Water Historical Society president and Peninsula resident, Ron Sinclair, has just returned from a five-week tour of historic sites in England, Wales and Scotland.
He was impressed by the way that museums, churches and historic sites were organised to provide a focal point for their area as well as to encourage tourism, a major industry in the Britain.
Mr Sinclair said that professionalism and enthusiasm was shown by many of the locals "who are justly proud of what they have inherited".
He said: "The great efforts made to capitalise on these assets for the benefit of their communities and for future generations is to be highly commended.
"The quality of guides is also top notch.
"Many have done professional courses to enable them to cover subjects and areas of interest and to make their presentation of their subject more interesting to visitors.
"It certainly pays off.
"When one sees the crowds and various venues, especially those with hands-on projects for children, or is involved with actual digs as at York, it is absolutely fascinating.
"The York Archaeological Centre even has a young archaeological club," he said.
The Brisbane Water Historical Society will hold an open day on Tuesday, October 1, between 10am and 3pm.
Mr Sinclair will give short talks and answer questions about his trip.
For further information, ring Ron at 4341 7039 or the society on 4325 2270.
