History of Housie

Cash Housie at Ettalong started running on Saturday nights in the late 1950s in a basic building with a dirt floor, thatched roof and no walls, diagonally opposite the Ambulance Station on Ocean View Road.

It was started to provide an income for the Catholic Parish which was poor at the time.

In those early days it was popular, being one of the few organised entertainments on the Peninsula.

It was later decided to build a better facility where Housie could be held comfortably.

In 1967, the new St Mary's Hall was opened, built from Housie funds on land that was donated to the parish.

Since the beginning, Housie has been operated by volunteers, such as Mercia Bannigan, who has been working there since the first game.
