School surveys computer use

A survey at Ettalong Public School has found that 60 per cent of families had a computer at home and 37 per cent had internet access.
Of the 186 respondents to the survey, 59 per cent said they would like help and guidance in computing and the internet, with 62 per cent looking to the school for help.
Other results were:
Access to a computer at another place, eg work, 54 per cent.
Use of internet, 34 per cent. The uses were e-mail 76 per cent, surfing 62, research 60, study 50, general 50, bank 15, shop 9, e-commerce 4.
Knowledge of computing: none 17 per cent, beginner 35, medium 20, good 12, advanced 7 and expert 3.
Cost of computers prohibitive? Yes 37 per cent, No 18, Fair 35, blank 8.
Internet telephone bill costs a problem? Yes 24 per cent, No 29, Fair 25, blank 20.
Where would you like to gain help and guidance? School 62 per cent, family 30 per cent, college 20, company 17, TAFE 16, multi-media 14, video 10 and phone 3.
Intend to purchase in next year: Yes 14 per cent, No 43, Maybe 28, blank 13.
How much? $500 7 per cent, $1000 6 per cent, $1500 13 per cent, $2000 24 per cent, $2500 9 per cent.
In which community groups do you participate? Sport 45 per cent, hobby 17, church 12, service 10, interest 6, other 17.
A parent information session will be held at the school this Wednesday, May 26, at 1.30pm, entitled "Technology and what we're doing in Ettalong Public School Community".
